CST was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger following extensive scientific studies from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University, where he served as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics.
CST is a hands-on, gentle method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.
Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.
By complementing the body's natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including:

I love that CranioSacral Therapy is gentle and can be done on adults, children and newborns.
I have worked with many newborns that have been born with vacuum extraction, c section & forcep delivery.
With vacuum extraction & forcep delivery, newborns can have quite a bit of force pulling the baby through the birth canal. Everything that is mobile inside the skull is pulled to the top of the skull. This can cause fluid congestion, excess blood and possibly some rupture of tiny capillaries in the brain which can be irritating to the brain tissue. Craniosacral therapy can help bring back the balance and helps decrease swelling. It has also proven to help calm these babies who can be very fussy.
In the event of an emergency c section, the fluid pressure inside the uterus changes quickly. If it does not have time to slowly change, as in the water breaking, there can be tremendous decompression problem for the newborn. This can be compared to a diver surfacing to quickly and not allowing decompression to take place.
I have had great results helping newborns in the 1st hours & weeks after birth.
Craniosacral therapy can also be extremely helpful with latching issues during breastfeeding. It is so exciting to see a newborn latch correctly and comfortably for the mom.
Each of these sweet newborns struggled with breastfeeding at first. After their craniosacral session they were all able to continue breasftfeeding without their moms experiencing pain!
Sally,
Thank you so much for your help! After the second session with you Noah has been able to nurse more and more each day. You really helped our breastfeeding relationship get established again after many weeks of difficulty. I'm so happy and can't thank you enough for the joy this has brought me.
Love, April and Noah
Ani Rain needed a little help with her jaw muscles. She was able to breastfeed much easier after her 1st session.
